  • A sailing club and stunning infinity pool

A visually arresting mixture of modernist and colonial architecture set right on the edge of Cambodia’s south coast, Knai Bang Chatt makes for a splendid and spoiling beachside stay. As well as striking palm trees, fine sand beaches and the enticing view of the Gulf of Thailand, there’s an infinity pool and a sailing club.

In more detail

There are just 18 rooms at Knai Bang Chatt, unfurling stylishily over four villas, each distinctive. The six Sea View doubles are the most popular, and the suite, all vibrant detail and vast, stretching over the entire second floor of one of the villas, is gorgeous as are the views from its private terrace.

The setting here is tropical dreamy, the cerulean sea just steps away. Looking out over it all, the infinity pool is surrounded by comfy sofas as day beds fashioned from driftwood provide further vantage spots. For a more immersive experience, the resort’s sailing club offers the chance to try out hobie cats, kayaks, a speedboat and sailing, or to simply relax and enjoy tasty, all-day dining. Served in an atmospheric fisherman’s cottage directly over the sea, the snacks and more substantial meals are moreish, as is the extensive cocktail menu.

There’s fine dining too, in The Strand, which offers both an open-air pavilion and air-conditioned restaurant. Kep is high in charm but not in high-end restaurants, and this is one of the finest of the few. Sparkling fresh seafood – crab, squid, scallops, shrimp and snapper – is a highlight, as you’d expect.

Spa treatments and yoga lessons are available for further indulgence, but really, those are just the icing on the Cambodian cake here.
