In more detail

Located at the far western end of the lush Punakha Valley, this luxury lodge from the COMO group is set on a bend of the Mo Chu River and offers the perfect base both to relax and also to explore Punakha’s spectacular scenery and cultural attractions. There are just nine extremely well-appointed rooms here and two opulent villas, all with breath-taking valley views.

The Valley View Rooms have king size beds and sheesham wood furniture set in a light and airy space adorned with bright paintings by local artisans. Some rooms have outdoor terraces and all have lounging space and beautiful bathrooms that feature deep soaking tubs and separate shower. The one-bedroomed standalone villa has a separate living room, bedroom and dressing room and there’s also a large two-bedroom villa with an expansive outdoor terrace that benefits from sweeping valley views. Both the villas have butler service.

Bukhari is the hotel’s intimate restaurant, named after the traditional Bhutanese fireplace, with an ever-changing global menu that includes Bhutan specialties alongside cassoulet, Wagyu burgers and Italian gnocchi, made using products sourced from local farmers where possible. The delicious dishes can be served indoors or on the riverside terrace warmed by terracotta chimineas.

COMO Shambhala Retreat is the hotel spa, set in a woodland glade and offering holistic therapies from two treatment rooms, one of which houses a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath. There are daily yoga classes and cultural and special interest tours can be organised. Guided day walks and mountain biking are also available, as well as white water rafting on the Mo Cho River.
