Unashamedly romantic and effortlessly refined, Elewana Elsa’s Kopje is carved into the sun‑warmed rock of Mughwango Hill, overlooking George Adamson’s original camp – the birthplace of Elsa the lioness and the setting for one of Africa’s most iconic conservation stories. Its elevated perch commands sweeping vistas across the wild, untouched plains of Meru National Park, a place celebrated for its remarkable biodiversity, flourishing rhino sanctuary, and striking semi‑arid landscapes laced with 13 seasonal rivers. Still one of Kenya’s least crowded parks, Meru offers a truly authentic safari, where big herds of elephant, lion, rhino, hippo and astonishing birdlife roam a wilderness often said to host more species than anywhere else in East Africa. From the lodge’s rocky terraces, the panoramas unfold endlessly across doum-palm forests, rolling plains and the distant, shimmering outline of Mount Kenya.

In more detail

Each of the lodge’s individually designed cottages has been thoughtfully built around the natural contours of the kopje. With open-fronted designs, they feature expansive bedrooms, light-filled sitting areas and private verandas that frame uninterrupted views across the plains. Guests can choose between several cottage categories, including romantic honeymoon hideaways with outdoor baths beneath the stars, a spacious family cottage, and the exclusive Private House, which offers two en-suite bedrooms, a private infinity pool, secluded garden and unforgettable vistas toward Mount Kenya.

Dining at Elewana Elsa’s Kopje celebrates the vibrant flavours of East Africa. The open-air restaurant overlooks vast, wildlife-rich plains – an extraordinary backdrop for breakfast and lunch – while dinner is an intimate, candlelit affair. Expect fresh, contemporary dishes with international influences, paired with a thoughtfully curated wine list. For something truly special, the lodge can arrange bush breakfasts, private sundowners or picnic lunches in remote wilderness settings. The infinity pool, seemingly floating above the sweeping plains, is a highlight of any stay, as is the tranquil massage room offering soothing treatments after a day of exploration.

Meru’s extraordinary landscapes are best discovered on expertly guided game drives, including the option of evening drives to witness the park’s nocturnal wildlife. Those seeking adventure on foot can embark on walking safaris up Mughwango Hill for breathtaking 360-degree views. Visits to the rhino sanctuary or excursions to the nearby Tana River provide deeper insight into the park’s rich ecosystems and ongoing conservation efforts.
