Set on Chile's remote Navarino Island just outside Puerto Williams, the world's southernmost town, The Cormorant at 55 South is the southernmost hotel on Earth. It's purpose-built exclusively for Silversea guests embarking on innovative Antarctica fly-cruise itineraries. Instead of the often-rough Drake Passage crossing, enjoy a night of comfort and luxury before and after the charter flight to King George Island, where the expedition ship departs for the White Continent. Designed as an immersive base in the Patagonian wilderness, the hotel takes its name from the cormorant bird, a seafarer’s symbol of good fortune.

In more detail

A rugged outpost at the end of the Americas, Puerto Williams is the world’s southernmost town. Set on the north shore of Navarino Island in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, The Cormorant at 55 South overlooks the Beagle Channel with the jagged, snow-covered Dientes de Navarino rising behind. Located on the outskirts of town, it’s conveniently close to the airport yet immersed in native forest. Its low-slung, wooden architecture blends into the landscape while adding another level of comfort to guests embarking on the adventure of a lifetime.

Building a hotel at the end of the Earth comes with unique challenges. Each of the 150 guestrooms was created off-site before being transported to Puerto Williams for modular assembly, minimising impact on this fragile environment. Identical in size and layout, rooms offer a choice of serene forest outlooks or shimmering water vistas. Inside, natural tones and textures and handmade Chilean artefacts create a calm, refined ambiance. All beds are king-size and can be converted into twins on request, while bathrooms are fresh and contemporary.

A soaring, grand lobby sets the tone, evoking excitement for the journey ahead and anchoring the bar, restaurant and lounge at this all-inclusive hotel. Latitude 55 is set up for family-style dining, serving the flavours of Tierra del Fuego with Chilean flair and a natural sense of community in the restaurant layout. At the heart of the public spaces, Bar Sur pours fine teas by day and inventive cocktails by night, while a fireplace lounge offers a cosy spot to read, relax and swap stories with fellow travellers beside a crackling hearth.

A range of guided activities is included in your stay, easing you into the Patagonian landscape. Join peaceful nature walks to observe local wildlife, venture deeper into the wilderness on invigorating hikes, or explore the Beagle Channel on a guided kayak experience.
