Luxury USA Holidays

The vastness of the USA, combined with its wide-ranging topography, makes it a country you'll want to return to many times over. Historic towns and cities meet natural world wonders to offer the discerning traveller new experiences on every journey. And, of course, it's the home of the all-American road trip, from the Pacific Coast Highway to Route 66. Discover it all alongside some of the world's best luxury accommodation.

If grand scenery is what you're after, the USA has it in spades. Gaze in wonder at the deep red rock gorges of the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon, the unique rock formations at Arches National Park and Monument Valley, or the towering Rockies in Colorado. Or, see erupting geysers and brightly-coloured pools at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, ancient sequoia trees at Yosemite National Park in California, and endless bodies of water across the Great Lakes region in the north east. Avid hikers will love the tranquil wilderness of the Berkshires, the Green Mountains and the rugged White Mountains, though the redwood forests of California are just as serene. In summer, New England and the ever-popular Cape Cod and coastal Maine are another haven for hikers and road-trippers.

It's California too, that offers some of the country's best food and wine experiences, where you can taste your way through Napa Valley and Sonoma, boarding the Wine Train to tour the region's best vineyards. In New England you'll find classic clam chowder and fresh seafood, while the deep south is all about spicy creole delicacies and succulent ribs. And, there's yet more world-class wine to be tasted in Oregon, Washington State and New York State.

The beaches of Florida and California are where the sun-seekers flock, while the ranches of Texas and Montana give a glimpse into the authentic Wild West. For history and culture, the civil rights trail and music scene in the deep south is hard to beat, though the USA's many cities are bursting with iconic landmarks. From the cosmopolitan melting pot of NYC, to colonial Boston, bohemian San Francisco and vibrant New Orleans, the big-hitters are spread far and wide. Connect them by short flight hops, high-speed train, or, for a truly American experience, the open road.

Special Experiences

Depending on the season – and where your travels take you – experiential holidays in the USA can mean everything from skiing down snow-covered mountains to sipping wine in sun-soaked vineyards. In summer, national parks across the country come alive with scenic hiking trails and sparkling waterfalls, while autumn in New England is famed for its richly-coloured fall foliage and fresh Atlantic air. In fact, the east coast offers everything from historic lighthouse tours and characterful inns, to luxury cruises and picture-perfect driving routes.

The west coast is all about the great outdoors, wine tasting in Santa Barbara, Napa and Sonoma, and the beaches and healthy lifestyle of Santa Monica. For nature and wildlife, head to Yosemite National Park, where you can walk among giants – the likes of El Capitan and the Half Dome are awe-inspiring sights. And, the breathtaking Pacific Coast Highway has to be one of the world's greatest self-drives. With seasonal whale-watching opportunities and the evergreen panoramic vistas of Big Sur, it's a true icon.

And, don't miss the chance for some glittering city living in Las Vegas. Aside from the glamour of the strip and its sensational casinos, the Grand Canyon is the perfect place for a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter flight.

When to go to the USA

There's no getting away from it, the USA is vast. And, as such, there's pretty much always a good time to visit. Late spring in California's northern national parks brings with it cool temperatures ideal for hiking, and full rivers and waterfalls for the best pictures. Summer, of course, is popular, as the beaches of California bustle with beautiful people, although accommodation can fill up quickly. In autumn, it's all about New England with its dramatic finery of red, gold and orange, while in winter, ski resorts open up offering deep powder and superb aprés ski. This is also arguably the best time to visit the Deep South as the weather remains dry and warm, particularly in the Gulf states.
