Like many hotels in Canada’s spectacular British Columbia region, Sonora Resort, part of the coveted Relais & Chateaux branch, is only reachable via plane or boat. Nestled on a stunning wooded archipelago, the resort lies within the wild beauty of the pristine Discovery Islands where empty beaches, rocky shorelines and dense forest landscapes dominate. You'll spend days spotting bears on guided hikes, witnessing soaring eagles and breaching whales on boat trips and hiking among towering trees and postcard-perfect views alongside a stay in a luxury suite. Come back to all-inclusive drinks, snacks and meals using the best of British Columbia's outdoor produce, before relaxing in the luxury spa or by cosy fire places.

In more detail

Sonora’s unreachability via car or foot makes it all the more charming and your arrival via seaplane, helicopter or water taxi is a wonderful introduction to the resort's delights. Stunning waterfront rooms in cedar and stone feature large windows letting in outside’s views, with tasteful furnishings and sumptuous private marble bathrooms that set the scene for wonderfully rugged coastal vistas edged with rippling, forest-blanketed slopes. The Yuculta lodge goes one up with two floors and two hot tubs, and then there’s the luxurious private villas, with timber-framed windows framing fir-flanked scenery, stone flag fireplaces and even a self-playing baby grand piano.

Come evening, explore the mouthwatering menus of executive Chef Lukas Gurtner in the sprawling Tyee Dining Room. A stay here is inclusive of all meals and beverages, and each evening you can expect the likes of rhubarb-cured salmon, rabbit rillettes, crusted Haida Gwaii halibut and wild boar alongside an extensive wine selection from the cellar. There’s also the spectacular chef's tasting menu that changes daily, offering such delights as Dungeness crab, suckling pig and sable fish.

Situated directly on the coastal rainforest shores, you're perfectly placed to explore. Kayaking is one of the main draws here, with serene rocky atolls and hidden inlets perfect for tranquil excursions and stopping for picnics. Then there's heli-fly-fishing, river fly-fishing, and salmon fishing – you can even enjoy your catch for dinner, prepared exactly to your taste. For more thrilling adventures, perhaps head on a helicopter tour or guided eco boat excursion, spotting grizzly and black bears, eagles and whales, or make use of the six complimentary mountain bikes and archery lessons. The amenities continue with the outdoor pool looking over the lake, a gym, tennis courts, the 18-hole Storey Creek Golf Course and even a movie theatre for when the weather doesn’t comply, and the resort even offers digital cameras to borrow for wildlife outings. After a day of adventure relax at the luxurious Island Currents Spa, offering hot tubs, mineral pools, saunas and massage treatments using ingredients plucked from outside's nature.
