In more detail

From the traditional Keralan architecture of resort's heritage cottages – all dark woods, four-poster beds and beamed ceilings – to the more contemporary feel of the Rock Garden rooms, the accommodation is utterly delightful. Expect the likes of private balconies and terraces, open-air baths and rain showers for an added splash of luxury. Then, if you feel like pushing the boat out, look to the Banyan Tree Bungalows with their private gardens or the Octagon – a stunning suite with wraparound ocean views.

As you'd expect, the dining here is superb, with menus showcasing the rich bounty of the Arabian Sea alongside the fragrant spices for which Kerala is famed. Indeed, you'll have the chance to experience a host of local dishes throughout your stay at the excellent cafe Samsara, or even try your hand at preparing some yourself with a chef-led lesson at the Niraamaya Cooking School.

Of course, there are other options as well, including Essence with its signature kebabs and sweeping coastal views, and Madira, where light bites are washed down poolside with expertly prepared cocktails. Or, if you're after something private, book one of the resort's 'Dining by Design' experiences – a candlelit dinner on the beach or a romantic bonfire barbecue, perhaps.

Then there's the spa, with its full range of treatments and programmes based on the ancient techniques of Ayurveda. Choose between standalone massages or courses lasting several indulgent days.
