A luxury cruise adventure on the impressively high-spec Silver Explorer is an exciting way of exploring some of the remotest parts of the world. Designed specifically for polar waters, she's a purpose-built ice-breaker vessel with a strengthened hull and ice-class notation, equipped for serious expeditions around the Arctic and Antarctic Peninsula.

In more detail

Not that you're restricted to the poles, given that you can also explore geographic extremes in Africa and Central and South America as the vessel transfers between the ends of the world. When you’re not discovering wild spaces and an abundance of wildlife in the company of a team of expedition experts, you can also indulge yourself onboard.

With almost one crew member per guest, the service is exemplary and you can revel in opulent surrounds and comfort levels that confound where you are in the world. The lounge drinks menus and signature fine dining are a particular highlight. There’s no need to agonise over which excursions, or indeed cocktails, to indulge with as every aspect of the cruise, from expeditions ashore to alcoholic drinks, are included in the cruise rate. You’ll also be treated to unlimited Wi-Fi and complimentary gratuities.

Passengers on expedition ships typically sleep in quite tight quarters. Not on Silver Explorer. Here, you’ll enjoy the largest average suite size of any expedition ship. While standard staterooms with portholes begin at 157 square feet, the Grand Suites measure 618 square feet and come complete with full-size living rooms and verandahs. The Owner’s Suites are positively enormous at 728 square feet and feature a huge teak balcony. All 66 suites have ocean views. They’re also all equipped with sumptuous Pratesi bed linens, indulgent Bulgari bath products, plush Etro robes and a complimentary bar stocked with your tipple of choice. You can also spoil yourself by choosing from an extensive pillow menu and by taking advantage of butler service for every stateroom and suite.

Excursions – Adventures on Silver Explorer

The reason that you’re on a Silversea expedition cruise though is for the adventure, right? Whether you’re sailing to the Arctic, Antarctic or anywhere in between, the motivation is the landscapes and scenery you’ll be able to explore and the wildlife that you’ll be able to encounter. The best thing about sailing on Silver Explorer are the excursions on one of the ship’s 12 Zodiac boats, which allow you to uncover the hidden corners and secret shores of even the most off-the-beaten path locations. Spend your days on one or more of the twice-daily excursions and let a guide, naturalist, geologist or marine biologist – handpicked for their knowledge and experience – lead you through an incredible landscape. Silversea’s expertise goes way beyond sailing and each specialist accompanying you will bring the area to life with insights and stories. You needn’t worry about remembering to bring any kit either, as technical gear such as snorkels and wet suits are supplied along with more rudimentary items including backpacks, water bottles and, if you feel the chill, a parka.

Relax – Entertainment on Silver Explorer

When you’re not out watching whales breach or enjoying a close-up encounter with penguins, bears and other wildlife, take time onboard to recharge. Immerse yourself in the region you’re sailing through with a lecture in the Explorer Theatre, hit the books in the library, enjoy piano music in the Panorama Lounge, gaze out on the seascape from Tor’s Observation Lounge or simply spoil yourself with a seriously good cognac (and a cigar if that’s your thing) in the Connoisseur’s Corner. If the mood takes you, join the occasional wine tasting or cookery classes led by a professional chef. If you’re aching after a trek to a waterfall or a hike on a glacier then let a professional masseuse ease away any soreness before you sign up for a treatment or wrap in the Zagara spa or enjoy a session in the steam room and sauna. Alternatively, simply sink into one of the two whirlpool Jacuzzis on the back deck in order to feel refreshed for the next adventure. While you slip through the Polar regions sitting in warm bubbling water, we guarantee the modern world will never have felt further away.

Dining – Eating aboard Silver Explorer

Your surroundings might say rugged adventure but the white tablecloth, fine china and impeccable service of The Restaurant, Silver Explorer’s main dining room, scream refined elegance. Here you can indulge in a multi-course, international menu tailored to the destination that your luxury cruise is sailing through as you gaze on sweeping ocean views; think Chilean sea bass as you navigate the fjords that indent this slither of a country. While at sea, spoil yourself with something from La Collection du Monde, a series of signature dishes created exclusively for Silversea by the Grands Chefs of Relais & Chateaux. For a particularly dramatic dining experience, dine out on deck at The Grill, which is dedicated to Silversea’s hot-rocks supper. You’ll be able to cook up your own meal on a hot volcanic rock right at your table. Wrap up warmly if the weather is a bit inclement; the crew will be only too happy to bring you a thick, cosy blanket.
