Experience the Cape Winelands in style at one of South Africa’s oldest working farms. Established in 1685, Boschendal sits between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, with a backdrop dominated by mountain peaks. At its heart is a 19th-century gabled manor house, flanked by pretty Cape Dutch buildings, oak-lined avenues, and pristine lawns. Stylishly revamped farm cottages offer a host of accommodation options, while three restaurants champion nourishing farm-to-table cuisine paired with Boschendal’s acclaimed wines. There’s no shortage of things to do, from wine tasting and picnics on the lawn, to hiking, mountain-biking, horse-riding, and wild swimming.

In more detail

With the Simonsberg and Drakenstein ranges forming a spectacular backdrop, Boschendal’s 1,900-hectare estate occupies a tranquil setting in the Groot Drakenstein Valley. With a focus on regeneration, sustainability and thoughtful, low-impact living, guests are invited to slow down and immerse themselves in the rhythms of nature. Located roughly an hour’s drive from Cape Town and 15 minutes apiece from Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, it’s perfectly placed for exploring the Cape Winelands.

Accommodation is dotted around the estate, from one-bedroom cottages to six-bedroom villas. All blend Cape heritage details with stylish simplicity, layered with luxurious fabrics and finishes. Open-plan living and dining spaces, kitchens or kitchenettes, and outdoor areas come as standard, with many adding a braai and shared or private pool. Werf and Clarence cottages are within strolling distance of the historic werf and its farm store and deli. For something special, opt for the Mountain Villa, a six-bedroom hideaway with gardens, a pool and a lake, or the 1685 Cottage, a gracious Herbert Baker home with an annex and eco-pool.

Dining is a delight, shaped around seasonal produce grown or raised on the farm. Many stays include breakfast, served in your cottage or nearest restaurant. The Deli offers relaxed, all-day, farm-style plates near the werf, while The Retreat brings easy, honest cooking to the quieter north-west corner of the estate. For something special, Arum’s innovative menus in the 1812 cellar and Boschendal’s much-loved werf picnics pair beautifully with the estate’s wine, which flows throughout the restaurants and bars.

Wine, naturally, features throughout many of the activities onsite, from tastings and wine-and-chocolate pairings to the signature Wander and Wine Safari through the vineyards. There’s a homeware store alongside the Farm Store and Deli, and plenty of ways to explore the estate from hiking, mountain-biking and horse-riding to garden tours and wild swimming. Younger guests are well catered for with a treehouse, playground, and supervised outdoor farm experiences.
